The River Heights Chamber of Commerce Welcomes 2016 Chairman of the Board, Brian MacKenzie of FASTSIGNS Inver Grove Heights

Brian MacKenzie

The River Heights Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors adopted the following guiding principles for 2016:
  1. We strive to provide proactive promotion of all our member organizations and the local business community.
  2. Together, our business representatives drive the Chamber’s advocacy, economic development, and programming initiatives.
  3. We bring the local business perspective to community conversations and to our local and state leaders.
  4. Our diverse business community is stronger with the Chamber leading as a unified, one-stop resource.
  5.  The River Heights region can thrive when our local, state, and national marketplaces function free of mandates and with government transparency.
Minnesota’s retirement population is about to explode. Are we ready?
From the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS: By some standards — in particular, those of AARP — Minnesota is the best place to retire in the country. Soon we’ll get the chance to put that distinction to the test: The “Roaring Twenties” of the 20th century will become the “Retiring Twenties” of the 21st. Starting in 2020 and lasting through 2030, for every one person of “working age” added to the Twin Cities metro area population, there will be 21 people added over the age of 65, according to Metropolitan Council data. That bears repeating: 21 retirees added to the metro area for every incoming person age 25 to 64. For 10 years. This will lead to a staggering demographic shift: One that will nearly double the metro area’s elderly population by 2040, when more than 1 in 5 people will be retired.

Disability-access lawsuits spark calls for
legislation
From the ST. PAUL PIONEER PRESS: A recent string of
lawsuits targeting Minnesota businesses that allegedly
are out of step with state and federal accessibility
standards has business leaders and some disability
advocates calling for new legislation. The Minnesota
Chamber of Commerce is working with the State Council
on Disability and other groups to draft a proposal they
plan to present during the 2016 legislative session.
They hope to give business owners an opportunity to
bring their facilities into compliance with the
Minnesota Human Rights Act before a lawsuit could
proceed. Read the full article here.

Working Families Agenda
The Minneapolis City Council is considering a proposal called the “Working Families Agenda.” The proposal includes initiatives for paid sick and safe leave and predictive scheduling. We saw similar legislation introduced at the State Legislature last session – however, the policies proposed by the City have been drafted even more broadly than at the State Level. For example, the scheduling proposal mandates a 28-day schedule and the sick leave proposal includes the ability to carry accrued leave from one Minneapolis employer to another. The advocates have expressed a timeline for passage of the Agenda for the end of this year.  This issue is likely to come up in future legislative sessions so we would like to hear from you on how these policies would affect your business if it was passed statewide. For more information about the proposal click here.
